Hello everyone! Welcome to this latest edition of Wheels, which is a case of back to the grindstone of dull reality after the mayhem of Hunger Games!
As always the first rule of Wheels is to have fun and be kind! (is that two rules? maybe, but they are equally important and go together!)
Most of the rest of them are tried and tested, but there are a couple of wrinkles this time, so do reread the official rules at some point.
The TL; DR is:
- points per page; books must be at least 100 pages (or an audio / wordcount minimum for "special" categories
- we'll be spelling out a word each round, using author, title, series & character initials (plus narrator and/or translator when applicable)
- books must be started after the countdown (info in team sheet), and finished in the round in which they are used
NEW!!!
Each reader has a personal book cap, based on their sign ups. The cap is in the official team sheet; going over the cap will result in PAIN, DAMAGE and DESTRUCTION, so we aren't going to do that! We'll have an overflow sheet for any excess books in each round, to tetris for maximum points
Bonus Points!
- for longer books
- for older books
- for BOMs
Admin
- captains are the only ones who get to add books to the official team sheet in post 1
- lovely Danielle will be working up a team sheet for everyone to add their books too, and that will be added to a post clearly marked
- you should be able to see the team sheet, but no write access
- if you don't want to add your books to the planner that's fine, just post a completion post with all the letters & reasons
- don't forget to add your books to your shelf. preferably only when you have started reading
- you are expected to check into the team at least once a week, so we know you are still about and playing. A quick post with progress report on your book (or latest TV binge) is fine. more frequent chats even better!
- if you have to reduce your reading / are going to go quiet / etc etc do let us know so we don't worry unduly (either the thread or directly as a PM to one of the captains or even to the mod account)
Anyway, onto the fun stuff:
- what useful letter books have you been saving all year for use in Wheels?
- what fun books are you looking forward to?
- how many books are you going to clear off the older shelves of your TBR?

Hello team! I see lots of familiar names here and some not so familiar, but hopefully that will change!
I am Keely, one of your co-captains. I am from the UK but will be in Norway for pretty much all of this challenge. For those that don't know, I am planning on moving to Norway to live with my boyfriend but because of boring (and annoying) rules, waiting for permission to move is long. So I visit as often as I can for as long as I can in the meantime!
I don't think I have any letters I've been saving, but I am hoping to make progress with some series I have already started. These include A Song of Ice and Fire (book 3 onwards), The Lunar Chronicles, and A Court of Thorns and Roses (book 2 onwards). These will come off my TBR list too!
I am planning on mainly focusing on longer books (for big points) which is why I signed up with a smaller number, but I am always happy to read something shorter and find random books that work to help fill in any gaps.

Hello team :)
I’m Danielle (she/her) and I’m from Wales. Looking forward to playing Wheels.
I haven’t saved any particular letters for wheel. I’m not much of a planner but I do hope to read some of my longer books and catch up some series.
Here’s my shelf wheel

Hi, I'm Lucy. Second time for this message thanks to Goodreads being its usual self! I live in the UK but mostly work night shifts so I do a lot of my reading while others are asleep. Looking forward to wheel and getting some of those older books off my TBR, like Jane Eyre and Rebecca.

Ok - so not on your team, but just thread stalking and well I swear you all should have
as your book mascot. ;) Really good book btw, but the family business is roofing.
Hi I am Marie she/her
I haven't saved any books for particular letters but I do need some vowel letters for another challenge
I have a series where MC is called Albert and another series where series title begins with E - I know vowels can be difficult to find
I am in God's own County of Yorkshire UK I am away for a week end of October when I may read less. The cap should be fine for me
My shelf has the truly riveting and immensely unique name of wheels9
i have no idea how i had the imagination to come up with it

I think I still have a couple of V books left and I'm sure I could find a dreaded X or two if needed.
Marie, I can't imagine what made you think of that as your shelf name! :P

Hi everyone. I'm Vikki from Northern Ireland. Looking forward to another Wheel!
I'll be in Italy for a weekend later this month but that won't impact taking part in the challenge. I've 2 flights to stick my nose in a book!
Don't have any books saved up for this challenge. Come mid/late November I'll be trying to get through the Christmas books on my shelves. Maybe I'll find some hard letters in them.

Hi, all. My name is Preeti. I am from India and live in the southern part of the country. I have been looking forward to this challenge. It is nice to see so many familiar names and get to know more people.
I was so pleased to see the bonuses for older and longer books. I have a huge list of classics I have been meaning to get to and this seems to be the perfect place to do so.

I've a couple of U books that I've been semi-hoarding:
(author, oldish title)
(title, oldish title)
but not much more right now. :(

Hello! I'm Elli from Singapore. I'm anticipating a lull period at work so I might get to sneak in more reading time. Hoping to finally read some lengthier books this round.

Hi everyone, I'm Sarah from the UK. I'm always hoarding Us and Xs, but don't really save others as most other letters seem to fall out quite easily, even the Qs and Zs. Which we don't need this time anyway, I think.
My shelf is the appropriately boringly named wheel-9.
Looking forward to seeing how many old books I can fit in! I have some new releases from the library which are annoyingly too new and too short for bonuses, but otherwise I'll do my best to maximise those points. :)

Hi everyone! So, we have our Round One word!
TAKE OUT GARBAGE
only the one U this round, but we can't relax too much on that front, as there are a LOT of U words!
Feel free to start adding planned books to the tracker sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
Also: BOMs. The Theme BOM (The Road Trip) will count for bonus points (and a B and O!) so do head over there to volunteer for DQs / get ready to answer questions : https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Here's my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Here's my shelf: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
Please pray for my soul, people! After much perusing, I finally chose my first two books...
It by Stephen King
Ulysses by James Joyce
Both big books, from what many people have told me one is likely to scare me to death and the other is very likely to bore me to death. 🫣😜
That said, I was told the same things about The Shining and Mrs. Dalloway and I ended up giving both 5 stars so one never knows. 🤷🏻♀️

Hi all. I think I have played on a team with nearly all of you at some point.
I live in England. I read a few books a week. I might read more than I claimed on the official sheet as I am trying to read as much as I can for Turf Wars. But we can use the best 5.
I'm excited to play and win with y'all.

By the way, am I the only person who had never heard of "The Women Roofers"?
In case anybody is interested in reading about them, I am adding links to the image from People magazine about them as well as an article from Carolina County's website.

@Preeti I read Ulysses many many years ago and enjoyed (most of) it. I certainly didn't fully grasp everything that was going on, but instead enjoyed the experience. and, a bit like the opera Aida, the last section was wonderful and made the struggles worthwhile!

I already have the hardback of this one. If it's November BOM I'll wait until then for it. I've been trying which books to read this month and there are too many options!

Hi I'm Mia! I live in Italy. Sorry to see this so late, but this my first reading challenge so I'll try to be the most active member possible, but please remember I'm in school and half to priorize that first.
Still, I'm exicited to read with you all!!

Hi Mia! No worries at all. GR hasn't helped with it's changes to notifications. You're here now and that's the important thing!
Also, all we ask it that you pop in to post once a week, any more than that is a delightful bonus, so focus on school 😀

@Preeti, I'm not sure I'm brave enough to try either of those - for exactly those reasons - too scary, too boring! Good luck!
I may have to invest 99p in The Spellshop. I put holds on both book and audio at the library in the vain hope that at least one would come in faster than the January dates I currently have. I'm really not going to get them in time...

if we need long books I might be tempted to re read The Count of Monte Cristo or The glums otherwise known as Les Misérables later in challenge. However our upstairs is currently in next door's garage as our kitchen refit meant we had to have a full house re wire and are now waiting for a whole house decorating challenge which we have given to the local (and in demand) decorator who cannot come until 4th November and is to be followed by carpet layer before furniture can return. We have been undergoing renovation since January 6th - I need a bit of renovation now
I can go and do a root through the book boxes if it becomes necessary

They stopped emails and also cleared the history of everyone's saved threads for notifications, so you have to manually refollow them, and remember to check the notification function in app.
Particularly annoying for those threads that are passively in the background or if you aren't on gr daily
