Strangely enough, or maybe it isn't so strange, in the chaos of the last few months and over the holiday season, I have been reading a fantastic series by Lois McMaster Bujold. The first book in the series is called Shards of Honour. I highly recommend the series if you are looking for action, adventure and a few laughs.

Kelly (Maybedog) (maybedog) I highly agree. Great fun that keeps you interested. Plus some great female characters.

I loved that too Laura.

The Book Whisperer (aka Boof) I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Sci-Fi but has anyone read John Wyndham? His books are what I would consider comfort reading sci-fi. The Midwich Cuckoos is absolutely brilliant!

Sarah I read all of his books around grade nine. Classic SF!

Boof, I think I saw the movie version of The Midwich Cuckoos called Village of the Damned. It freaked me out!

Exactly! They always make me laugh and they have just enough action to keep things interesting. I'm not even half way through the series so I have lots to look forward to. I love that Miles!

Heidi (gisgirl) | 5 comments My dad introduced me to Jack Chalker's Well World Series (5 books) and I was captivated! Alse have read his G.O.D. Inc. series and The Devil Will Drag You Under.

Cool, I've never heard of Jack Chalker. I'll go have a peek.

Peregrine | 91 comments My top two SF comfort reads are Lilith's Brood by Octavia E. Butler, and The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin. Three-gendered aliens in the first, mainly androgynous aliens in the second, brilliant, suspenseful, satisfying writing in both. Yeah!
I'd also put Dreamsnake by Vonda N. McIntyre, and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card in the Comfort SF category.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I read Ender's Game last year and it felt like a comfort read to me.

It's strange but I actually find most science fiction to be comfort reading for me. There's something about being immersed in a completely alien world to take me away from my troubles.

Peregrine, thanks for the suggestions, I've just added Dreamsnake to my list.

Peregrine | 91 comments BunWat wrote: "That's funny Peregrine because I would not call those comfort reads at all! Which completely does not mean you are wrong, what each of us finds comforting is different as we have already discussed..."

I tend to feel comforted whenever I find a good story with lesbian or other-gendered characters. One of my now oft-repeated lines is that most literature is relentlessly heterosexual. The kinda-like-me element scores big when the story is good too.

Oh! It's a Sheri S. Tepper book I've never heard of. Cool.

Are you reading the book, or is the book reading you? :D

Cosmic, man!

Lianne (eclecticreading) I love sci-fi but I realised over the past few years that I actually don't read as much sci-fi as I thought I did lol (have to change that this year). And thinking of sci-fi comfort reads, I actually can't think of one in particular that I'd consider to be a comfort read...maybe Douglas Adams's The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the first volume was hilarious xD

The Pirate Ghost (Formerly known as the Curmudgeon) (pirateghost) I have been reading two series lately. A Galaxy Unknown by Thomas Deprima and The Lost Fleet by Jack Campbell. Campbell's is maybe a bit better but Deprima's series has a strong female lead. Both are military sci-fi and both probably qualify as Space Operas. I've read better but these have kept me entertained in a good way.
