In Geoffrey Sax's 2005 thriller "White Noise," Michael Keaton plays an architect named Jonathan Rivers (not to be confused with rocker Johnny Rivers) who is living in connubial bliss with his second wife Anna (Chandra West). One night, Anna doesn't come home. She remains missing for five months. Jonathan is devastated, but holds out hope that she may still be alive. One day, he is contacted by a man named Raymond (Ian McNeice) who claims to have a clue as to Anna's whereabouts. Raymond has been watching static-tuned TVs and listening to garbled radio signals, and claims he can hear voices emerging through the hissing. Raymond is convinced that the voices are the voices of ghosts, able to communicate with the land of the living through electrical signals.
Jonathan doesn't believe Raymond at first, but soon falls under the spell of white noise monitoring. He finds that his monitoring is...

In the HBO series "House of the Dragon, actor Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, a character who will -- should "Dragon" last long enough -- no doubt commit multiple acts of murder, perhaps a few acts of torture, certainly several acts of incest, and, just for good measure, two separate acts of enthused cannibalism. Probably also tax evasion. This postulation is based merely on how lascivious and gnarly the show's predecessor, "Game of Thrones," was throughout its 2011 through 2019 run.
Smith's screen acting career began in 2006 with his appearance on a TV adaptation of Philip Pullman's novel "Ruby in the Smoke" and its sequel "Shadow in the North." He was a regular character on the BBC Two series "Party Animals" before landing the plum gig of The Doctor in "Doctor Who" in 2010. The Doctor, for neophytes, is a near-immortal space alien who can, upon his death, choose to regenerate into a new body.

Sometimes, it’s possible for a TV series’ greatest strength to also be the source of its greatest shortcoming. It’s a paradox not readily apparent in “Us,” based on David Nicholls’ book of the same name and the latest presentation of PBS’ long-running “Masterpiece.” At the outset, the show offers up a surprisingly blunt telling of a familiar story. Over the course of a morning, Connie (Saskia Reeves) informs her husband Douglas (Tom Hollander) that she’s decided to leave him.
In the face of this monumental shift in their family, Douglas ultimately pushes for the two of them and their son Albie (Tom Taylor) to follow through on their plans for a grand European holiday, winding through cities in the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, among other tourist-friendly stops. These overnight stays bounce back and forth between the grating (Douglas always worried about missing a reservation for a spot...

There’s a sense that history is repeating itself right now, with our entertainment overlords once again deciding that a live-action adaptation of Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider novels is exactly what we need. But long before the upcoming Amazon Prime series was a twinkle in anybody’s eye, a feature-length film starring some high-profile British actors arrived in cinemas in 2006.
That film was Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker. A fairly faithful adaptation of the first book in Horowitz’s series, with a few added action scenes and beefed out roles for the supporting players, the Stormbreaker movie was an inoffensive way to spend a brisk 93 minutes.
The companies that invested in the film – which included The Weinstein Company in the Us, and Mpc, Samuelson Productions and Isle Of Man Film in the UK – presumably went into the production of the movie hoping to spark an on-going film franchise. After all,...

Alex Rider, the teen superspy series of novels that’s sold around 20M copies worldwide, is coming to the small screen in an eight-part series from Foyle’s War producer Eleventh Hour Films and Sony Pictures Television, with the Hollywood studio using a new funding model to set up the drama before taking it out to international buyers later this year.
The companies have unveiled the first trailer for the series, which stars Mrs Wilson’s Otto Farrant as the eponymous teen spy, and Deadline spoke to the team behind the project about its unusual origin story.
Created by author Anthony Horowitz, the first Alex Rider book Stormbreaker was published in 2000 and was later made into a feature film, directed by Geoffrey Sax, in 2006.

Doctor Who has been such a time-honored pillar of the TV landscape that Geoffrey Sax’s feature film, one that was initially released in ’96, is often overlooked.
Headed up by Paul McGann, who played the eighth incarnation of the beloved Time Lord, Sax’s TV movie was admittedly a bit of a flop, and failed to carve out much of an audience 20 years ago. Turns out it also heralded Eric Roberts’ first and last appearance in the Doctor Who franchise, as outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat revealed to Digital Spy that he never once considered bringing Roberts back as the Master for season 10’s show-stopping finale.
I like that TV movie and I liked him as the Master, I thought he was funny. But he’s not part… and sometimes this just happens… he’s not part, somehow, of anyone’s pantheon of Doctor Who. Not because he didn’t do...

While Divergent may have succeeded financially, (a film that rode on the coat-tails of the even more lucrative The Hunger Games franchise) there are others who didn’t quite make it into the movie world’s big leagues. These are the franchise-starters that flopped, the films produced with the optimistic hope that they will bring in the readies and kick-start Hollywood’s latest franchise. Worse luck for them, really.

“Bad apples, Morse. Every barrel’s got them”
Endeavour has had a near perfect second season run. Yes, the season hasn’t packed the same emotional punch that the first did, but the mysteries have been intriguing and the most important aspect of Endeavour, its characters, have continued to develop and fascinate. The show has also managed to break away once and for all from the shadow of Inspector Morse. Smart storylines and powerful performances, particularly by Shaun Evans as Endeavour and Roger Allam as Thursday, have made the show one of the best character studies on TV.
Like all Endeavour episodes, the finale features three seemingly unconnected cases that eventually come together. There is a missing boy with a brutally abusive father, a murdered journalist, and a convict who breaks...

Geoffrey Sax's Frankie & Alice comes with some warning signs: the words "based on true events," for starters, along with three credits for "original story" and five for the screenplay. (It took eight people to tell a true story?) Then there's the fact that this film has been sitting on the shelf since 2010.
Fortunately, Frankie & Alice is by no means the train wreck any of that would suggest, especially for a film starring Halle Berry as a stripper suffering from multiple personalities.
Frankie (Berry) puts herself under the care of a psychotherapist played by Stellan Skarsgard in his lovable eccentric mode, making the picture feel all the more like an unintentional, nudity-free companion piece to Lars von Trier's Nymphomaniac. (Speaking of such th...

A 1970s set drama about a young black woman suffering from personality disorder? If that doesn't tick a few obvious Oscar boxes, we don't know what does, and Halle Berry certainly thought she'd have another shot at an award. Way back in 2010, "Frankie & Alice" was being positioned as a contender, but it barely made ripple and wound up sitting on a shelf for four years awaiting the light of day. Well, that day arrives this weekend and eight clips have dropped to compel you to give in to your curiosity. This story centers on a young woman with a personality disorder who struggles to contain her racist alter-ego, with Stellan Skarsgård, Chandra Wilson and Phylicia Rashad supporting and Geoffrey Sax ("White Noise," "Alex Rider: Stormbreaker") behind the camera. That does sound good on paper but good movies don't generally sit on a shelf for four years only to quietly hit...

Back in 2010, the indie drama Frankie & Alice was believed to be a viable chance for Halle Berry to get another Oscar nomination. But as some indies do, the film say on a shelf with no distribution, and Berry missed out on her chance at Oscar gold. But four years later, the film is poised for release this spring, and while it's likely not going to get any attention at the Academy Awards next year, at least audiences can see what has been praised as a spectacular performance for Berry playing a young woman in the 70s with a personality disorder who struggles to contain a racist alter-ego. It looks a little over-the-top though. Watch? Once upon a time, way, way back in 2010, Halle Berry was gunning for her second Oscar nomination (after winning for "Monster's Ball") with "Frankie & Alice." At the time, it was an indie film without a major studio behind it, but that didn't deter the actress, who was hoping her turn as a mentally ill woman would garner some attention. It didn't. Now here we are four years later, with the movie quietly headed to theaters. Co-starring Stellan Skarsgård, Chandra Wilson and Phylicia Rashad, and directed by Geoffrey Sax ("White Noise," "Alex Rider: Stormbreaker"), the 1970s-set drama centers on a young woman with a personality disorder (Berry) who struggles to contain her racist alter-ego. And the first trailer reveals that there is nothing particularly subtle about this one, with Berry mostly flailing her arms and running around as her hidden personality rises to the surface when dramatically necessary. Sometimes, things sit on a shelf for a.

Code Black Films' "Frankie & Alice" has a new trailer up for the film which hits theaters April 4th. This one has been a long time coming and is in fact a 2010-produced film, which is helmed by Geoffrey Sax from the writing by Cheryl Edwards, Marko King, Mary King, Jonathan Watters, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. That's a lot of scribes. "Frankie & Alice" is inspired by the remarkable true story of an African American go-go dancer "Frankie" with multiple personalities (dissociative identity disorder or “Did”) who struggles to remain her true self while fighting against two very unique alter egos: a seven-year-old child named Genius and a Southern white racist woman named Alice. In order to stop the multiple voices in her head, Frankie (Berry) works together with a psychotherapist (Stellan Skarsgard) to uncover and overcome the mystery of the inner ghosts that haunt her.

She may not be taking on the biggest blockbusters the industry has to offer, but Christina Ricci has been keeping busy in Hollywood. In addition to small screen gigs like the short-lived series Pan Am and her one episode appearance on The Good Wife, she starred alongside Robert Pattinson in last year's Bel Ami; has a role in the upcoming drama Mother's Day with Susan Sarandon, Andie McDowell and Sharon Stone; and will be lending her voice to one of the main villains in this summer's Smurfs 2. And today she's added another project to her upcoming slate. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ricci has signed on to star in the upcoming thriller Unmasked, the new film from director Geoffrey Sax. Sources say that the script was found on Inktip.com and optioned by Sean Thomas, the producer of the upcoming William H. Macy, Sam Rockwell and Melissa Leo starrer A Single Shot. Sax, known for directing films like Frankie & Alice and White Noise, will direct the film which tells of a man who joins a dangerous and mysterious club in order to relive the worst day of his life. Really? Why would you want to do that? Perhaps that description isn't summing the project's true meaning.

Variety reports that Geoffrey Sax (Frankie and Alice, White Noise) has signed on to direct Unmasked, a psychological thriller written by newcomer Peter Scott Vicaire. The movie follows a man who joins an underground club for the sole purpose of reliving the worst day of his life. Vicaire’s script has obvious Fight Club influences but according to the article it also has shades of Stanley Kubrick‘s Eyes Wide Shut so it’s completely understandable why the director of Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker was courted for the job (that’s sarcasm folks!).
All (painfully unfunny) joking aside, Unmasked definitely sounds interesting and I’m intrigued about the details of this supposed “worst day ever” that the main character is dying to relive. And as a White Noise apologist, I’m not totally against having Sax in the director’s chair; he’s handled psychological themes before and he’s capable.

Christopher Smith, whose prior directorial efforts include Creep, Severance and Triangle, has made a habit of unpredictability as a director. In his latest effort, Smith explores one of the darkest periods in history, the black death pandemic of the mid-1300's which depleted Europe's population by almost one half during its legendary path of destruction. I spoke exclusively with Smith about his gritty, bloody portrayal of the Black Death and his possible next project, which might be a noir road trip movie in homage to Detour and Wild at Heart. Black Death is an incredibly ambitious project, especially for its relatively tight budget. What was the starting point? Originally Geoffrey Sax was going...

Oh, you American and Canadian Whovians without a region-free DVD player, today is your lucky day. For today is the day that the made-for-u.S.ian-tv Doctor Who movie starring Paul McGann as our favorite renegade Time Lord finally arrives on Region 1 DVD. Gary S. Dalkin’s review on Amazon is a small thing of beauty. An excerpt: [T]he most eccentrically British of programs [has] been almost entirely assimilated by the requirements of American network broadcasting. Matthew Jacobs' screenplay is literally nonsense, dependent on arbitrary, unexplained events while introducing numerous elements that contradict established Doctor Who mythology. The Tardis is re-imagined as a bizarre pre-Raphaelite/Gothic folly, while the Doctor, now half-human, becomes romantically involved with his lady companion. From the West Coast setting to metallic CGI morphing, from the look of Eric Roberts as the Master to a motorcycle/truck freeway chase, director Geoffrey Sax borrows freely from James Cameron...

Chicago – The stunning looks of Halle Berry is always the lead whenever the entertainment media considers her. But in “Frankie and Alice,” she reminds us of why her career continues to flourish and why she is a Best Actress Oscar winner.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Berry plays a complex character ridden with the psychological burden of multiple personalities. Based on a true story, this is the type of situation that as a film could be exploited or trivialized. To the credit of the production and especially Halle Berry, it’s handled with sensitivity.
Berry portrays Frankie, a stripper in Los Angeles in 1973. There is something odd about her, as she is liable to pontificate on several bizarre angles of the profession. After picking up a guy named Cliff (Adrian Holmes), she has a mental breakdown in his presence. She switches from the personality of a streetwise stripper to a bigoted society lady, blathering...
