Beating all odds Takashi Yamazaki’s Godzilla Minus One became the first ever film in the franchise to win an Academy Award. The talented filmmaker not only looked after the direction of the film but also handled the writing and visual effects.
After causing much chaos at the Oscars, fans are now excited for the movie’s sequel which will reportedly be directed by Yamazaki again. However, this time a familiar face should lead the Kaiju film, and it’s none other than Hiroyuki Sanada. Instead of the Westernization of the movie, fans deserve an authentic but talented cast and the Shōgun actor is the perfect choice.

Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.
A new “Godzilla” movie, from the director of last year’s Oscar-winning Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” has been officially greenlit. Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, made the announcement on Friday.
Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed the surprise hit “Godzilla Minus One,” will return for the new film. He’s once again handling the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023.
“Godzilla Minus One” was Toho 33rd “Godzilla” movie and the 37th to include the famous monster. The Japanese film is unrelated to Hollywood’s recent portrayals of Godzilla in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monsterverse, which includes King Kong. Set in Japan after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Next week’s hyper-contentious election and its face-off between virulently opposed camps has cast a fearful pall over our culture, creating an atmosphere where political terrors are outdoing the movie versions. Why hasn’t someone made a slasher pic about volunteers canvassing door-to-door at dusk?
This uneasy vibe has foregrounded an uncomfortable truth about horror films: how they often come with subtle political messages that are not always subtle enough to obscure which way they might vote in November. (To be clear, films cannot cast votes in a presidential election.) For example, you could easily argue that one of the most blatantly Republican horror movies was The Exorcist, along with the entire satanic-possession genre. In William Friedkin’s 1972 original, science and modern medicine are completely powerless to dent the demon who has possessed the innocent victim, leaving it up to the patriarchal Catholic Church to take on Pazuzu (and forge...

The Simpsons’ annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials were a seasonal highlight and a strong opportunity for the animated series to truly let loose and explore radical riffs on celebrated horror touchstones like The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, and even classic genre archetypes like King Kong and The Twilight Zone. It’s appreciated that The Simpsons hasn’t turned its back on this annual tradition and that it’s still going strong. There are now more “Treehouse of Horror” episodes than there are days in October. Now, despite the pedigree of the “Treehouse of Horror” specials, they’ve become increasingly inconsistent and lazy in many regards, much like The Simpsons as a whole.
The Simpsons’ “Treehouse of Horror” entries now just tackle the biggest pop culture trends, rather than explicitly telling horror stories. Instead of episodes that are focused on successful horror films from the past few years like Smile,...

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.

When you're young, your favorite movies can leave quite an impression on you. For a nine-year-old boy in New Zealand, it set him on the path towards becoming a filmmaker. Indeed, Peter Jackson's first viewing of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack's 1933 epic "King Kong" on a tiny television screen inspired him to make movies. In a 2005 interview with NBC News, Jackson said the film had a "profound effect" on him and described its titular ape as "a very special little chap" who captured his heart. When he was 12, he even made a rubber Kong and cardboard model of the Empire State Building and tried to animate it using his parents' Super-8 camera.
What was it about "King Kong" that Peter Jackson loved so much? In an interview with Chud, he once described the film as "a wonderful piece of escapist entertainment.

These are frightening times. Of this, there is no doubt. We may even believe there’s never been more to fear. And for some populations, that’s true. But humanity has always lived in frightening times.
Since we first cast shadows onto cavern walls, we’ve made things to fear. Over time, those shadows evolved into performers donning masks, authors putting ink to paper, and filmmakers harnessing technology to project our nightmares onto the screen as we returned to our cave-dwelling roots to sit in the dark with others. We are a horror people. And as the world has gotten scarier, horror has been there to reflect back our fears.
The rise of Hollywood and independent filmmaking in the 20th century created a lasting dialogue between what we see in the fear-seeking news, and what films are made in response. Early American horror movies of the mid-1920s and 30s,...

In less than a week, the Ssu will proudly introduce Knull—the King in Black, one of Marvel’s most formidable and fascinating villains. Despite being a relatively new character in Marvel comics, he has generated significant buzz leading up to the film’s release.
While we should temper our expectations, as the director of Venom: The Last Dance has stated that this is just the beginning for Knull, we’re still excited to catch every glimpse of him. However, based on the promotional materials released so far, it appears his role will be limited to only a few scenes.
It appears that Knull will heavily utilize CGI, but a voice actor is still needed to bring the character to life. The recently released promo suggests that the voice will be provided by none other than Andy Serkis. While there hasn’t been any official confirmation, the voice clearly belongs to Serkis,...

Earlier this year, HBO released the second season of its Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, and proceeded to knock all our socks off with the epic scale of its special effects. Has there ever been a clash between dragons in the sky like the Battle of Rook's Rest? I certainly can't think of one.
We'll be waiting a while to see what happens next for the series; House of the Dragon won't start filming season 3 until early 2025, which means we won't be watching it until 2026. In the meantime, we tide ourselves over with snippets of news and glimpses behind the scenes. The latest of those comes courtesy of Vanity Fair, which sat down with showrunner Ryan Condal to discuss what went into filming some of House of the Dragon's biggest scenes for their new interview series The Craft Of...

Horror movies are rarely critical darlings, and it’s even rarer for a horror sequel to garner critical acclaim. The best horror movie sequel, however, seems to be universally loved. That’s pretty interesting, considering that the star of the movie didn’t like its direction.
The best horror sequel had a hard act to follow
The most important movies are so famous that you know the storyline even if you haven’t watched them. For example, everyone seems to know the plot of King Kong whether or nor you’ve watched the 1933 film or any of its remakes. James Whale’s 1931 film Frankenstein is in that category. Everyone is familiar with the tale of Frankenstein’s monster, but the version of the tale we all know is derived from the 1931 film rather than Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel. Whale’s movie remains one of the bedrocks of horror cinema.

Naomi Watts made a striking appearance alongside her son, Sasha Schreiber, 17, on the red carpet of the premiere of her new film, The Friend, in New York City. The pair sported matching all-black looks, and the teenager’s growth was on full display as he stood noticeably taller than his mother. It marked a rare public appearance for Sasha.
The 55-year-old actress, known for her roles in films such as The Impossible and King Kong, looked elegant in a black strapless dress featuring a sheer bodice with a corset-like design and a glossy, structured skirt. She completed the look with pointed black heels and statement earrings, adding to the glamorous ensemble.
However, Sasha’s height caught the attention of fans and photographers. He wore a sleek black suit paired with a simple black shirt, opting for a laid-back yet polished look that further emphasized his towering presence.

There are some stories in the history of film that end up being repeated over and over again. Some of these are just simple categories like vampire, werewolf, and zombie films. Some of them get a little more granular and specific like the story of Dracula or Frankenstein’s monster. Finally, we can get even more granular and look at a specific title that has made the rounds a few times. I Am Legend by the wonderful and prolific Richard Matheson was made into three different movies with Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man, and finally I Am Legend. While King Kong and Phantom of the Opera probably have the most, Invasion of the Body Snatchers has the most consistent offerings. The 2007 iteration was a bust but the other 3 are all incredibly solid. With the 90s version turning 30 we thought it was worth seeing if it was a generic...

The Incredible Hulk, the second film in what would eventually become the MCU, was released in 2008, concurrently with Iron Man. However, because it doesn’t exactly have the same prestige as the other MCU films, it is also one of the more contentious films in the franchise.
There are many reasons for this, but even though the MCU is gradually revisiting the film and reevaluating its value in the current MCU canon, the largest issue with it—the proverbial “elephant in the room”—is that Mark Ruffalo took Edward Norton’s role as the Hulk.
This is the largest recasting of a major character in the MCU to date, and it marks the only instance in which a hero has actually been recast.
But, while this caused a lot of changes, Marvel’s treatment of the Hulk in the mostly child-friendly atmosphere led to numerous issues later on, some of...

Comic books are not just fuel for some of the biggest movies and TV shows of all time. Aside from being a genuinely great medium that could enrich the lives of many people who haven't previously wandered down that endless rabbit hole, comics offer the chance to do things that can't be done on screen. They represent imagination that is only limited by what a given artist can do with a pen, and what a writer can dream up. That even extends to utterly bonkers crossovers that couldn't happen anywhere else, like "King Kong" meets "Planet of the Apes." It turns out, the world came very close to getting a DC and "Star Wars" crossover several years back. Why didn't it happen? That's where things get frustrating.
For some historical context, writer Kurt Busiek revealed in 2017 on Twitter that he was working on a "Superman/Star Wars" crossover with the...

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown into such a phenomenon over the past 15+ plus years. What started with Iron Man in 2008 has expanded into a whole universe full of heroes, villains, and everything in between. We can't even just say universe anymore because it has widened those barriers, expanding into the whole of the Marvel multiverse at this point.
The Marvel Studios franchise is in the midst of its Multiverse Saga, with the various movies and Disney Plus shows exploring alternate realms, and even introducing new versions of old characters. It feels like a cliché to say that the sky is the limit for Marvel because it always was, but in terms of what the film series can accomplish now, the sky truly is the limit.

New Hal Jordan Has Been Cast in ‘Lanterns,’ But Fans Aren’t Fully On Board: “DC Studios/WB is Broke”
The DC Universe has many projects in development under the guidance of James Gunn and Peter Safran. Among the most immediate releases are the animated series Creature Commandos and Superman, set for a 2025 release, along with several live-action shows featuring prominent DC characters.
One of these upcoming shows is Lanterns, which will focus on three key Green Lanterns: Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Guy Gardner.
We already know that Nathan Fillion will portray Guy Gardner, having been cast even before the show was officially announced. The only remaining mysteries are who will play John Stewart—rumored to be a younger actor—and Hal Jordan, for whom the studio is seeking an older “mentor-type” personality.
Recently, reports surfaced that Josh Brolin was offered the role of Hal Jordan, but fans reacted negatively, citing his age as a concern. Brolin reportedly turned down the role, and THR has now reported that Emmy-winner...

Kyle Chandler is in negotiations for a lead role in the Green Lantern series “Lanterns” at HBO, Variety has confirmed with sources.

High-concept movies, particularly those based on previous films or novels, often face an uphill battle to surpass their predecessors. The inevitable comparisons and ‘who did it better’ debates can overshadow the new iteration’s merits. However, every so often, a fresh take can breathe new life into a beloved character, defying expectations and captivating audiences anew.
Jeff Bridges, in particular, had a profound vision for a beloved character from the MonsterVerse. The King Kong (1976) actor had a potential sequel, which unfortunately never came to fruition due to the movie’s modest box office performance. Jeff Bridges, in particular, had a profound vision for a beloved character from the MonsterVerse. The King Kong (1976) actor had a potential sequel, which unfortunately never came to fruition due to the movie’s modest box office performance. Antoine Fuqua's 2001 cop drama "Training Day" is notable for its hellish tone, gritty photography, and amazing central performance from the incomparable Denzel Washington. Indeed, "Training Day" won Washington his second acting Academy Award for playing LAPD Detective Alonzo Harris, the most horrible and corrupt cop on the force. Ethan Hawke plays Jake Hoyt, the cop assigned to learn from Alonzo on the day before his promotion. Hoyt will get a disturbing crash course in how deeply the violence and corruption of the LAPD really runs.
Although Alonzo is a terrible person, he's an appealing villain, and many viewers came to love his gnashing and displays of brazen power. Alonzo's line "King Kong ain't got nothing on me," written by David Ayer, was briefly a part of the oft-repeated pop canon. "Training Day" was Fuqua's third feature as a director (after "The Replacement Killers" and "Bait"), but it was the...

The big new release for the week is of course Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but that’s just one of six brand new genre movies now available in theaters and/or at home this week.
Here’s all the new horror that released Friday, September 6, 2024!
For daily reminders about new horror releases, be sure to follow @HorrorCalendar.
Brandy (I Still Know What You Did Last Summer) returns to horror in the new A24 horror movie The Front Room, which was just released in theaters nationwide today.
What’s particularly interesting about the psychological horror movie is that it’s directed by Max and Sam Eggers, the brothers of Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Northman)!
This will be the debut feature for the Eggers Brothers, in fact. Variety had recently reported, “They adapted the screenplay from Susan Hill’s short story of the same name.”

It is sometimes amazing to see what directors who have made a successful movie can get away with. One hit, and studios are willing to hand these people a fortune for their dream projects. Heaven’s Gate comes to mind as one archetypal example, but there are many other misfires from award-winning filmmakers. A few years ago director Michael Gracey scored a surprise smash with an original musical, The Greatest Showman. And now he has a new musical film about British pop star Robbie Williams — with a CGI monkey in the leading role.
That’s right, a monkey. This fact was kept under wraps before the first Telluride screening of Better Man. But I guess now the ape is out of the bag. Good luck to Paramount, who will release the movie in December.
In the past there have been classic movies with monkeys as central characters — King Kong, of course,...

In a time where CGI and other digital technology reign as the kings of cinema special effects, Full Moon Features has released a film with old school SFX and a production timeline nearly half a century-long, spanning from conceptualization to release, with The Primevals.
And this timeline length is no exaggeration. The road to this film’s release began with plot elements used in the 1968 short film Raiders of the Stone Ring by writer-director David Allen (Puppet Master II and The Howling) that evolved into a full-length film script by 1975 and then produced by Charles Band in 1978. Alas, pre-production saw some funding issues surface that postponed the project until filming commenced again in 1994, before finally being completed and released in 2023.
After learning of the existence of Yeti when one is killed in Nepal, Dr. Claire Collier (Juliet Mills) and her student Matt Connor (Richard Joseph Paul) head to the Himalayas to investigate its origin.

We know that the MonsterVerse franchise is extremely popular. What started off as a Godzilla and King Kong reboot became a major cinematic franchise that brought the studio a lot of money. More projects are being planned after several successful outings, but it seems that the franchise is also working on a completely new form of collaboration with another popular franchise.
The Transformers franchise is one of the best-known mecha franchises of all time. What started off as a series of action figures and a Japanese-American animated series became one of the most popular brands in the world and one of the best 80s series ever. Since its debut, numerous revivals and reboots have been made, including video games and a live-action movie series that started off strongly but began declining at one point.

From ants to snakes, Paul Rudd seems obsessed with the creepy crawlies.
Deadline is reporting that the “Ant-Man” star is currently up for an Emmy for “Only Murders in the Building” (and a second Emmy nomination for narration) and is in talks with Sony for a remake of the 1997 adventure picture “Anaconda” for Sony. Also rumored to be in the cast is the Grammy-winning actor and comic Jack Black. The screenplay was penned by Tom Gormican and Kevin Etten, who created the meta-Nicolas Cage adventure “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and also wrote the recent “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” and Netflix. Gormican is set to direct.
Black recently made some news when his Tenacious D. partner Kyle Gass gaffed after the assassination attempt against Donald Trump onstage in Sydney. The “King Fu Panda” star then ended their decades-long partnership. Rudd, once highly regarded for his comic performances in smaller films,...

Since its inception in 1971, Walt Disney World has been providing guests with top-tier attractions from movies dating back to the late 1930s. Most of the rides at Magic Kingdom mirror Disneyland, but it seems Disney World wants to tap into a new generation.
The biggest headline is Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America will be replaced with a modified Cars Land. After walking around Mk post announcements, fans are swarming to the Island and river boat. So where was this level of passion prior?
Attractions like Tsi don't provide guests with anything. There used to be a little quick service on the island, but it's since been closed and never reopened. Sure, there are washrooms with no lines which is a great bonus, but it's not worth waiting 5-10 minutes for a boat to pick you up and another 5-10 minutes to get to the island.

Jeff Bridges made his unofficial screen debut in John Cromwell's 1951 drama "The Company She Keeps" just over a year after he was born. The son of actors Dorothy and Lloyd Bridges, he steadily proved himself a nepo baby of the finest order upon reaching young adulthood. In the 50 years and change since then, he's done it all, be it squaring off with King Kong, riding a light cycle on The Grid, or seeking compensation for the damage to his prized rug. (It really tied his living room together.) He even snagged a long-expected Oscar for playing an alcoholic country singer in Scott Cooper's "Crazy Heart," a film that arrived on the heels of Bridges portraying the first-ever Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in "Iron Man."
Trying to decide which of Bridges' movies stands out above the rest is a formidable challenge. It's also one that we, thankfully, need not...

The Simpsons hasn’t exactly shied away from including references to Woody Allen over the years, such as when Bart and Homer spotted him shooting a Japanese rice cracker commercial, or when he was seen hammering out Chinese fortune cookie messages, or the time he was absolutely torn apart by the comic stylings of McBain.
But while these jokes were obviously intended to demean the Oscar-winning filmmaker/accused sexual predator, the show once came very close to including an innocuous Allen reference at the worst possible time.
The second segment in “Treehouse of Horror III” was the King Kong parody “King Homer,” which ends with an old-timey newspaper spinning into frame bearing the headline “Woman Weds Ape.” Just below it is the headline “Dick Cavett Born,” featuring an image of a fully adult Dick Cavett.
