Every so often, I like to go on YouTube and see if any old TV pilot episodes have been posted. The site actually has quite a few of them...particularly unsold pilots. Most of them are pretty terrible, so it's easy to question my sanity for watching them. But every so often you see one and wonder why it wasn't picked up by any of the networks...and "My Island Family" is one of them.
Pat Boone plays an American who has been sent to some fictional island republic. The place is odd...not only because of its lack of technology but because most everyone looks Hispanic but the women inexplicably dress in Polynesian outfits. No matter. His job is to work with the government on a building project and it looks like it will be tough going as things seem a bit backwards. But, on the positive side, everyone is so kind...particularly the family that he stays with, as there's no motel on the island. However, they are a bit TOO nice...and so he tries to subtly suggest they back off a bit. Will they take the hint?
Unlike most failed sitcoms, the laugh track is not a problem. The show also works for me because it didn't try too hard...focusing less on jokes and cheap laughs and more on characterizations. It makes you wish they'd made a few more episodes.
