Prince Harry has returned to the US after a quick 24-hour visit to his father, King Charles, after it was announced the monarch had been diagnosed with cancer. The Duke of Sussex flew solo for the trip, leaving his wife Meghan Markle and their two children at home in California.

Harry spent around 30 minutes with his father on Tuesday, shortly after Buckingham Palace announced the King's unexpected health news. After his brief visit, Harry was seen heading back to Heathrow airport on Wednesday, ready to return to the States.

During his stay, Harry chose to stay at a London hotel during his first night in the UK, rather than at a Royal residence. This is similar to his visit in September for the Well Child Awards, reports TheMirror.com.

Buckingham Palace announced on Monday night that Charles had been diagnosed with cancer. A statement said: “During the King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted.

“Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

“Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

“The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure.

“He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

“His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”

Charles personally called both Harry and William, as well as his siblings Anne, the Duke of York and the Duke of Edinburgh, to give them the news before it was publicly announced to the nation by the Palace at 6pm on Monday.

This is the latest major royal health scare to hit the monarchy at the start of 2024, coming after the King’s hospital stay, Kate’s major surgery, keeping her away from official duties until after Easter, and Sarah, Duchess of York’s skin cancer diagnosis.

Meanwhile, it has been revealed that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will have his weekly chat with King Charles III over the phone this week due to the King's recent cancer diagnosis.

It's still unclear whether all future meetings with the King will be conducted over the phone. Despite his health issues, the King continues to work and receive his daily red boxes.
