You can opt-in to a VisualEditor plug-in that lets you set and change the language settings on selections of text as part of the Beta Features programme. This is to gather feedback from users ahead of making it available for all VisualEditor users, once it is more polished.
Once opted-in, you will get a new item in the "More" section of the styling menu on the toolbar, currently labelled "Language" and showing "Aあ" as its icon. Similarly, existing text with language settings will be highlighted in pale grey, and will now get the icon when you cursor in them.
Clicking the icon will pop up an inspector to set language information, or change it if it already is present. This uses the same interface as the Universal Language Selector, letting you alter the language (e.g. set to Arabic – lang="ar"
in wikitext) and optionally the direction (e.g. toggle the directionality over-riding switch – like dir="ltr"
in wikitext).
If you have any feedback about editing language settings, please comment on the discussion page with your concerns, queries or suggestions.
