Engineering research
Engineering and Product Design are fast-paced areas, driven by the need for constant improvement. Through their research, our engineers are making these improvements happen. It’s this innovation that drives our teaching.
The Department of Engineering and Design carries out high-quality research activities over a number of strategic research areas. We have excellent facilities and laboratories, including the Future Technologies Laboratories in computing, robotics, electronics and mechatronics.
We have three main research centres in the School of Engineering and Informatics:
- Advanced Communications and Signal Processing
- Energy and Materials Engineering
- Robotics and Sensor Technology.
Our research students are associated with one or more of our research groups. Learn more about our Engineering PhD.

Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence research
We carry out internationally leading research across a range of areas in computer science, artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive science. Our research spans the theoretical and applied, often crossing traditional discipline boundaries.
Our research is organised around the following three research groups:
Our research often leads to collaborations between the groups, as well as with other departments at Sussex, academic institutions and commercial partners. Funding for research projects comes from UK research councils, Innovate UK (formerly the Technology Strategy Board), the European Union, charities, industrial contracts and philanthropic donations.
Members of Informatics play leading roles in the following interdisciplinary research centres at Sussex:
- Centre for Computational Neuroscience and Robotics (CCNR)
- Centre for Research in Cognitive Science (COGS)
- Sussex Centre for Consciousness Science (SCCS)
- Data Intensive Science Center, University of Sussex (DISCUS)
- Sussex Centre for Sensory Neuroscience and Computing (SNAC)
- Sussex Humanities Lab (SHL)
- Sussex Neuroscience.
