I have a huge collection of pictures of Turkey, and have been showing those on my private website. Over the ages I've had many requests to add to Wiki Commons, and as I'm getting old (70) and have more time on hand I gave in. I'm fast approaching contribution (as Dosseman) of 1000 pictures (I'm well into the 800's). I often find that Wikipedia pages, related to Turkey, are poor. Lack of illustrations, sometimes wrong information. For instance: I was in a newly opened museum in Troy in december that is not in the Wikipedia. Finds there are still placed in a museum that has been closed, in Canakkale. I'd like to edit that, but feel I'm not able yet. However, in the case of the Kilims I was not very impressed with the links. "My" page shows the pieces on an exhibition of a famous collector (Josephine Powell), then recently deceased, and I thought I might please people in showing them. I do not see what is being advertised here.
== ArbCom 2018 election voter message ==
I have had links deleted before, some people correct that, after understanding that I promote Turkish culture, without gain. I for my part am astounded at the number of commercial links that "happily" remain on many a Turkey page.
Maybe you could reconsider. Please do not touch my other contributions, or I feel I must leave the Wiki Commons alone. And take a look at https://pbase.com/dosseman/me_in_print page to find that many authors of renown, publishers, many major universities and many media (BBC, Unesco sites) were only too glad to find my "advertisement" on Wikipedia and use material supplied by me.
My apologies if I misuse "talk". I still have to work out how to respond to interference like yours.

I still do not know (even after having read instructions) where to answer your very speedy reply. I realize this should not be te beginning of a beautiful friendship, but there are a few things I'd like to let you know.
== ArbCom 2018 election voter message ==
First, I do apologize for that “interfere”. After 55 years of daily reading English I’m aware it’s somewhat strong. It may have to do with the fact that the Dutch translation would be "bemoeien", where that verb does not have as strong a peorative load. In fact a "bemoeial" is a person to be voided, whereas "bemoeienis" is just a mild having-to-do-with someone or something. And maybe I’m a bit touchy.
I visit Turkey 4 times a year and when I started my site I received a letter from the director of the ministry of culture and tourism, urging me to keep extending my site. That was after three pictures had been published in a book with a foreword my then - and now - prime minister Erdogan.
Nowadays I cannot read articles in the Wikipedia when in the country, because Wikipedia is blocked. In Turkey, the state interferes. I have been kept two hours in a police station for taking pictures, the likes of which I later found on Google Streetview.

Maybe as a result of that I try to help make a better Wikipedia about Turkey and cultural elements I come across, like kilims, in English. On some issues placing of links even then is impossible if only the official website has rights. But that site is very poor. For instance: the museum I mentioned is still not in it, the closed one is.

Recently an archaeologist who had been excavating in the ‘70’s wrote that the ministry is in chaos. I often receive requests by researchers who on vain tried to contact museums. They simply don’t get an answer. I try and answer in a day.

With 78000 pictures adding them all to Wiki Commons would take years. So I sometimes take recourse to a link. I realize I must not overdo this, but sometimes an existing page is just too poor. I hope this explains things, again thanks for answering.

Hi Dosseman!
Hi Dosseman! I hope you are getting used to the technicalities of this site!! By the way, when you upload images, it is better to do so in Commons, because it will allow users from Wikipedias in other languages to use your images as well... otherwise they will only be available on the English Wikipedia. I still do not understand how and where to answer properly. Your message alarmed me. However, for as far as I can see I have so far uploaded to Commons over 1000 pictures, I can see them counted when I check my Dosseman (Commons) identity, see them listed too. Hello. When you write "External Links" as a section heading, you're violating the Wikipedia convention on capitalization in section headings. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Generally, the first letter in the heading is capitalized, and later initial letters are capitalized only if there's a reason to do so; being in a section heading is not considered such a reason. Michael Hardy 23:41, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

If this is a fault, it's not this user's. It's mine, as I put the External xinks section in the Ankara article. :) Also, refraining from using words like "violating", "convention", to newbies will go a long way in expanding Wikipedia and the community, me thinks. With respect, mu5ti/talk 05:38, Apr 16, 2005 (UTC)

[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, your addition of one or more external links to the page Ankara has been reverted.

Your edit here was reverted by an automated bot that attempts to remove unwanted links and spam from Wikipedia. The external link you added or changed is on my list of links to remove and probably shouldn't be included in Wikipedia. The external links I reverted were matching the following regex rule(s): \bpbase\.com\b (links: http://www.pbase.com/dosseman/ankara_turkey).

If you were trying to insert an external link that does comply with our policies and guidelines, then please accept my creator's apologies and feel free to undo the bot's revert. However, if the link does not comply with our policies and guidelines, but your edit included other changes to the article, feel free to make those changes again without re-adding the link. Please read Wikipedia's external links guideline for more information, and consult my list of frequently-reverted sites. For more information about me, see my FAQ page. Thanks! --XLinkBot (talk) 09:57, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Safeguarding your linked content

[edit]

Hi Dosseman. Your addition to external links at Temple of Artemis seems to have offered a link to the page in editing mode - I'm not sure about this, but it seemed to risk changes to the linked site content by unauthorised users. The link now connects to the photos in non-edit mode. Haploidavey (talk) 15:11, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Haploidavey, I appreciate your work, I do not know how to answer apart from leaving this message.

I realize this should not be te beginning of a beautiful friendship, but there are a few things I'd like to let you know.

Commons

[edit]

Hi Dosseman! I hope you are getting used to the technicalities of this site!! By the way, when you upload images, it is better to do so in Commons, because it will allow users from Wikipedias in other languages to use your images as well... otherwise they will only be available on the English Wikipedia. Best! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 15:24, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I still do not understand how and where to answer properly. Your message alarmed me. However, for as far as I can see I have so far uploaded to Commons over 1000 pictures, I can see them counted when I check my Dosseman (Commons) identity, see them listed too. Can you see them too, or am I somehow still working for the English Wikipedia only?

Dosseman (talk) 19:17, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dosseman. No, your Commons uploads so far are fine, they are visible here. I was just refering to one or two files which you seem to have uploaded to the English Wikipedia recently: [6], [7], but you have also uploaded them separately on Commons, so I guess it's just a mix-up. Ahhh, I see now, you were just improving on someone else's upload of two of your images on the English Wikipedia. So everything's fine, and you are using Commons the proper way. Thank you again for all your great contributions! पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 19:41, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,

That's a relief. And it's as you gathered. I intend to publish a few thousand more, so "wqatch this space". You seem to live on the wbe, never saw such quick responses. Thanks. Dosseman (talk) 19:50, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. पाटलिपुत्र (talk) 19:52, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Afyon Ulu Camii moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Afyon Ulu Camii, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.
