Hello, I made a suggestion for an addition to the [[Jim Goetz]] on the article's [[Talk page|Talk:Jim_Goetz#Proposed_Philanthropy_section]]. Would anyone here be interested in reviewing it? I have a conflict of interest with regard to Mr. Goetz, so it's best I not edit the article myself. COI guidance

Hello! I have a question about WP:COISELF, which says that articles about someone you know in real life should go through the WP:AFC process. I would like to overhaul + flesh out the sourcing on the article John Hagan (sailor), who is my grandfather. I'm very familiar with sourcing policies and obviously wouldn't use/rely on any sort of personal knowledge - If I were to draft a rewrite in my sandbox, could that then go through WP:EDITREQUEST to solve for the COI? ThadeusOfNazereth(he/him)Talk to Me! 11:43, 22 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong place to ask. This is a WikiProject talk page, not a place to get advice on biographies or conflicts of interest. For biographies, that'd probably best be WP:BLPN. For COI, that'd probably be WP:COIN. That said, our core guidelines and policies don't suddenly become optional once you've made a certain number of edits. I assumed that members of the Wikiproject would be familiar with what's normally done in this situation. our core guidelines and policies don't suddenly become optional once you've made a certain number of edits: I did not imply they did. Question about infobox |name= and article title?

Hi, the Template:Infobox person documentation reads (my bold):

Parameter Explanation
name Common name of person (defaults to article name if left blank; provide |birth_name= (below) if different from |name=). If middle initials are specified (or implied) by the lead of the article, and are not specified separately in the |birth_name= parameter, include them here. Do not put honorifics or alternative names in this parameter. There are separate parameters for these things, covered below.
birth_name Name at birth; only use if different from |name=.

I read this as saying not to use |birth_name= if it would otherwise repeat |name=, save for the specificity of a middle name/initial, and that if that is the case and |birth_name= is not used, a middle initial can be in |name= even if it's not present in the article title, provided a middle initial is "implied" by the lead (which I took to mean a middle name is present in the first sentence).

And I know elsewhere, MOS:INFOBOXNAME reads (again, my bold):

The template should have a large, bold title line. Either a table caption or a header can be used for this. It should be named the common name of the article's subject but may contain the full (official) name; this does not need to match the article's Wikipedia title, but falling back to use that (with {{PAGENAMEBASE}}) is usually fine. It should not contain a link.

As such I have read these to say that |name= can include a middle initial even if that middle initial is not in the article title, however I wanted to ask to see if there was a consensus that the article title had to match exactly. This conversation started initially for the article Lilias Armstrong (Talk:Lilias Armstrong#Middle initial in infobox), although when I found other FAs of biographies where the |name= differed from the article title to show precedent for a mismatch (see the edit summary [1] nope, not standard, see literally every GA/FA out there, they all got changed as well ([2], [3], [4], [5]). Looking for some clarification as to what is standard practice and if, perhaps, the Infobox person template documentation is out of sync with some policy elsewhere mandating |name= be identical to the WP:COMMONNAME selected as the title. Thanks for any thoughts which might clear up my confusion! Courtesy ping GiantSnowman. Umimmak (talk) 17:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

My nearly 20 year experience of editing BLPs is - the name parameter reflects the name of the subject (which is also the article title), with some minor exceptions like royalty/aristocracy, and the birthname/fullname parameter is for inclusion of middle names as well. If there is no middle name, then there is no need to use both. GiantSnowman 18:40, 29 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hei, one question: do you think this information I've added to this draft are enough to get accepted? Or should I search for more informations? Thank you so much in advance! Best Cora Cora1106 (talk) 06:01, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'd love to see where and when he graduated from, with what degrees. He has published at least 30 or 40 papers, that should be mentioned. Also, he is still the scientific director of the CESR, your draft is in past tense. Sourcing is much improved. Annwfwn (talk) 14:40, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hei thank you so much for your input, I will search for it, and good sources as well! and actually he is not the director any more because there was an intern switch in the Univeristy of Kassel.

Matters of alma maters

Hello,

I recently made an edit request on behalf of a client to update a BLP (see here) and was informed by the reviewing editor that biographies should not include information about the subject's undergraduate studies, and that "A bachelor's is not an academic degree." They cited MOS:DEGREE, and the line "The lead sentence should be concise: Academic (including honorary) degrees and professional qualifications may be mentioned in the article, along with the above, but should be omitted from the lead, as should superseded honors (e.g., the lesser of two grades in an order), and those issued by other entities (e.g., sub-national organizations)." This is from the section of the MOS on post-nominal letters, and I believe it refers to when to include those with the subject's name. As far as I know, a bachelor's is an academic degree. In fact, the article academic degrees clearly includes undergraduate degrees (including bachelor's), and in my experience alma maters, whether attended at an undergraduate or graduate level, are frequently mentioned in biographies on Wikipedia.

I would love any clarification editors here can provide on whether it is acceptable to mention undergraduate degrees and alma maters in a biography on Wikipedia. If there is something I am missing, please let me know, so I can make better requests in the future. Cheers! BINK Robin (talk) 17:53, 12 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks to User:Russ Woodroofe for weighing in. I am seeking editor assistance to update the biography's Memberships section, and I've proposed removing the "advertisement" banner, if any project members are able to help. Thanks! BINK Robin (talk) 18:18, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Coco Lee

The biography appears unbalanced in light of ongoing controversies. Reports of her husband's infidelity are covered much less compared to a workplace incident being prematurely connected to her health issues and death by an editor. Inputs would be appreciated on the article's talk page. Vacosea (talk) 13:14, 13 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What is the best way to handle disambiguation of personal name?

I really don't want this perceived as canvassing. What is the best placement for the title of an article when disambiguation is a problem? Let's say you have chess master, Thomas Wentworth, and there are seven other equally famous Thomas Wentworth's. He has the sourced middle name of Percy but really never uses it. No other Thomas Wentworth has the middle name Percy. Is it better to place his article title at Thomas Percy Wentworth or Thomas Wentworth (chess)? The middle name could be sourced to older university biographies, but really nothing else. Consensus will usually happen one way or the other regardless of guidelines depending on the editors in move request, but in most cases which way would WikiProject Biography lean as best for our readers? I've always wondered about this since we always strive not to use parentheses but then we also don't want to use a factual middle name that a person rarely uses. Fyunck(click) (talk) 03:39, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If Thomas Percy Wentworth isn't his WP:COMMONNAME, then the article should be titled Thomas Wentworth (chess). WikiOriginal-9 (talk) 05:05, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
