Commodore Cup is an Australian motor racing series. The series, a one-make series originally devised by Victorian racers Maurie Platt and David Gittus, is named for the car all competitors must use in competition, the Holden Commodore. The first series was held in 1994. Eligibility is limited to specific Commodore models. Originally only the first three series were allowed; VB, VC and VH. Motive power was likewise limited to the 4.2 litre version of the Holden V8 engine.[1] The regulations were designed to provide a limited level of performance modification, while not making the category especially expensive to run. The category has always been moderately well supported with grid sizes steadily in the 15-25 bracket.
2004 saw the first major change to series regulations when later model Commodores, specifically VR and VS models, although the mechanical package was not changed substantially. The later model cars have proved to be convincingly faster and numbers of the older model Commodores have dropped off.
The category has always been a national series, but at the same time mostly an amateur series, although the category has produced a race winning V8 Supercar driver in Lee Holdsworth. The category today is one of the core categories of the Shannons Nationals Motor Racing Championships. The series most successful driver has been Geoff Emery who won the Commodore Cup series five times.
