Mariana Villanueva was born in Mexico. She studied composition at the National Music Conservatory in Mexico, studying under [[Mario Lavista]], [[Fredrico Ibarra]], [[Julio Estrada]] and [[Daniel Catan]]. She received a bachelor's and master's degree from [[Carnegie Mellon University]] in [[Pittsburgh]], [[Pennsylvania]], studying under [[Leonardo Balada]] and [[Lucas Foss]], and a doctorate in music history from Autonomous Metropolitan University.
