News Night (titled as News Night with Pia Hontiveros on weekdays & News Night Weekend with Mai Rodriguez on weekends) is the flagship evening newscast of CNN Philippines. It premiered on March 27, 2017, replacing CNN Philippines Network News, which has been airing since the channel's predecessors Talk TV, Solar News Channel and 9TV, as part of the station's programming expansion since the appointment of Armie Jarin-Bennett as its managing director. Network News holdovers Pia Hontiveros and Mai Rodriguez are the anchors. [1]
History and development
News Night was first unveiled at an intimate network meeting on March 7, 2017 as a replacement for CNN Philippines Network News and as a part of Armie Jarin-Bennett's continuing program restructuring. Prior to the reformat, Network News had been the sole holdover from its premiere under Solar News but had been embattled by mounting viewer criticism over retaining the name despite the network-affiliation rebranding thrice during its near 5-year run.
Network promotional material tagged News Night as a newscast that goes above and beyond the headlines.
On March 27, 2017, News Night premiered, replacing its predecessor at its prime 6:00 pm slot. It also debuted new and more interactive segments, making the show have the most newscast segments, a distinction formerly held by Serbisyo All Access.
Inaugural broadcast
Its first guest is PNP Chief Ronald dela Rosa to talk about the government's war on drugs.
