Change from Evis to Evisu

[edit]

I once heard that name change from evis to evisu was the result of a legal threat from Levis, as Evisu had started in an closed Levis factory, and their early logo was basically the Levi's logo without the L. Anyone know if there's any truth to that? Melander 02:10, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds real unlikely. "Evisu" is a coy re-spelling of "Ebisu" who is a lucky god in Japan. But maybe you knew that. Then again, they are based in Osaka, Yakuza capital of Japan, and a hub of Japanese brand rip-offs. So maybe! You like how I contradicted myself in a single comment? brain 18:38, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1. There was no threat from Levi's. The logo was an homage to Levi's. During WW2 Levi's was not allowed to use thread to sew their logo on the pockets of their jeans for conservation purposes, so they painted the logos on the pockets. As such, Evisu is honoring that tradition. They have gone through many legal discussions with Levi's and it has all been settled properly. 2. The name DID come from the lucky god in Japan, but he happens to be the god of money, and Hidehiko Yamane wanted to make money so he named the brand Evisu / Ebisu. Popularity

[edit]

I think there should be something about the growing popularity of this brand. Rap artists constantly mention the brand, they're hugely popular in the urban community, and are becoming much more mainstream
