Zayda Peña Arjona (circa 1979December 1, 2007) was the lead singer for the Mexican grupero band Zayda y los Culpables (Zayda and the Guilty) until men shot her in a hospital. The group sang romantic ballads about love and loss. The song "Tiro de Gracia" (Coup de Grâce) was one of the most popular songs from the band. [1]

Shortly before midnight on November 29, 2007, an unknown gunman shot Peña in the back at Mónaco Motel in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, across the U.S.-Mexico border from Brownsville, Texas. Two people — a friend of Peña and the motel manager — died from gunshots. [2] Paramedics took her to Alfredo Pumarejo Hospital in Matamoros, where doctors determined that her injuries were not fatal. [3]

The next day, several assailants entered the hospital; poor security allowed them to roam the corridors. Doctors placed Peña in emergency surgery to remove the bullet. [2] The assailants shot her to ensure her death. The Dallas Morning News stated that the fatal bullet pierced her back [4], and The Independent states that the fatal bullet hit her face. [1]

Her mother, Blanca Aidé Arjona, works in a public prosecutor office as of 2007. [3]

The death of Peña caused singers who do not perform narcocorridos and who are not connected to drug trades to feel concerned for their lives. [1]
