Matthew John Corby (b. 7 November 1990, Australia) is an Australian singer, who was the runner-up to Natalie Gauci on the fifth season of Australian Idol in 2007.[1]

Australian Idol

Matt Corby auditioned in Sydney, New South Wales. He was the last person to audition in 2007. He was selected by the judges as one of the final 24 after strong performances throughout the theatre rounds. Matt was in the first male group to perform and the following night he was voted as the first person through to the top 12.

During the Top 12 performances he was the first contestant of the series to receive one of Mark Holden's coveted "touchdowns" for his rendition of The Beatles' song "Got to Get You into My Life". He later received two more touchdowns in his following performances, "Bitter Sweet Symphony" by The Verve and "The Music of the Night" from The Phantom of the Opera.

On the 12th of November Corby was voted into the Final 2, joining Natalie Gauci. He recorded the winner's single, "Here I Am" along with Natalie Gauci at Kings Cross studio in Sydney, and performed the song at the Grand Final. It was also at this point that Matt Corby was announced as the Runner Up to the Australian Idol competition.

Post-Idol

Even though he was not the winner of Australian Idol 2007, Matt Corby's potential agent were in negotiations to have him perform at the Carols in the Domain event on December 22.[2]. Ultimately, Matt did not perform at the event.

Following the short-lived success of Casey Donovan (singer), the winner of the second season, SonyBMG decided not to rush Corby into a recording contract. After a meeting where he was to sign, the label decided to give him more space and time so that he could spend more time developing his own musical style. SonyBMG stated once he was ready, then they woult negotiate in another meeting[3].

He will accompany Natalie Gauci on her Winner's Journey Tour with a 45 minute performance.[4]

He also performed at the Youth Alive event Welcome To Summer on 30 November 2007 along with Antiskeptic and Lukas.[citation needed]
