The Rusu clan (留守氏, Rusu-shi) were direct descendants to Fujiwara Kaneie and adopted their respective surname following Minamoto no Yoritomo's conquest of northern Japan -- a prelude to the Genpei War's initial beginning. By the Nanbokucho Period of the 14th century, they would enlist within the army of Kitabatake Akiie and support the Southern Court's cause against the Northern; but as the Southern forces were defeated, it is not known what fortunes the Rusu were forced to rely upon up until the beginning of the Sengoku Period, other than their presence within the province of Mutsu. Establishing a domain for themselves at Takamori castle by the 16th century, the Rusu were consistently supported by their mutual comrades, the Date, and were provided with many respective heirs for the sake of their family's succession. Relations between the Rusu and Date continued to improve, and in the Edo period, the Rusu became samurai of the Date clan's Sendai Domain.
