They are modeled after the Hole in the Wall Gang Camp in the U.S. state of Connecticut, founded by Paul Newman and A. E. Hotchner in 1988.

The camps serve children seriously ill children, including those with HIV, Sickle-cell disease, cancer, and other serious illnesses. The camp is free to campers.[1]
