Gorgon Venture refers to a joint venture of ChevronTexaco, Shell and ExxonMobil and which is developing major liquefied natural gas reserves known collectively as Greater Gorgon in the Carnarvon Basin in the North West Shelf off Western Australia.[1]

ChevronTexaco, with a four-sevenths interest, is the operator of the development on behalf of the Venture partners. The company inherited the assets of WAPET, an early Western Australian oil exploration operation.

Gorgon was found in 1980, following the discovery of the West Tryal Rocks field in 1973 by WAPET.

Reserves

Greater Gorgon gas fields are located approximately 60km offshore from Barrow Island and approximately 200km west of Dampier on the Australian mainland. To the north is the North West Shelf Venture which was established in 1984.

To date, five significant fields have been discovered: Gorgon, Chrysaor, Dionysus, West Tryal Rocks and Spar.

Probable reserves in the Greater Gorgon area exceed 17.6 TCF (trillion cubic feet), with certified possible reserves increasing to 21.5 TCF.
