The BYU Cougars football team is one of four NCAA Division I FBS independent schools, along with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen. BYU and the other independents do not compete for conference championships, but they have increased flexibility with their schedules because they do not have seven to nine mandated conference opponents.
