This chart shows spending during the Obama administration relative to a trend line based on the historical 5% annual increase. By the latter part of his administration, spending was below the trend line.
The chart uses two data series:
Actual U.S. Federal spending per the Congressional Budget Office historical tables.[1][2]
A trend line, computed applying a 4.9% annual increase to the 2008 actual spending amount. The 4.9% figure is the compound annual growth rate in spending from 1990-2008, also computed from the CBO historical tables.
