Kleiner was born May 24, 1955 in [[Dortmund|Dortmund, Germany]]. He completed his [[Abitur]] in 1974 at Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium and studied mechanical engineering at [[Technical University of Dortmund|Technical University Dortmund]] from 1974 to 1982.
