: {{zh-x|孟子 曰：「人 皆 有 不忍人之心。先王 有 不忍人之心，斯 有 不 忍 人 之 政 矣。以 不忍人之心，行 不 忍 人 之 政，治 天下 可 運 之 掌 上。所以 謂 人 皆 有 不忍人之心 者，今 人 乍 見 孺子 將 入 於 井，皆 有 怵惕 惻隱 之 心。非 所以 內{nà}交 於 孺子 之 父母 也，非 所以 要 譽 於 鄉黨 朋友 也，非 惡 其 聲 而 然 也。」|Mencius said, 'All men have '''a mind which cannot bear to see the sufferings of others'''. 'The ancient kings had this commiserating mind, and they, as a matter of course, had likewise a commiserating government. When with '''a commiserating mind''' was practised a commiserating government, to rule the kingdom was as easy a matter as to make anything go round in the palm. When I say that all men have '''a mind which cannot bear to see the sufferings of others''', my meaning may be illustrated thus: even now-a-days, if men suddenly see a child about to fall into a well, they will without exception experience a feeling of alarm and distress.
