Inherited from Old Italian biastema,[1] from Ecclesiastical Latin, Late Latin blasphēmia (remodeled after the verb bestemmiare,[2] or alternatively through a Vulgar Latin form *blastemia[3]), from Ancient Greek βλασφημία (blasphēmía).
