WebM是一個由Google資助的專案，目標是構建一個開放的、免著作權費用的視訊檔格式。該視訊檔格式應能提供高品質的影片壓縮以配合HTML5使用。
WebM專案是一個使用BSD許可證的開源專案。它採用了On2 Technologies開發的VP8及其後續版本VP9影片編解碼器和Xiph.Org基金會開發的Vorbis音訊編解碼器，使用的封裝格式則以Matroska格式為基礎。[2][3]
支援
軟體
WebM專案是在2010年的Google I/O會議上發布的[2]，之中宣布將會支援WebM的廠商有Mozilla[4][5]、Opera[6][7]和Google[8]。
另外，Adobe已宣布Adobe Flash Player將在未來支援VP8，但還沒有宣布會支援Vorbis或WebM[1][9]。
VLC[10][11]、Miro[12][13]和Moovida[14]等播放器也已宣布會支援。
Android從其2.3版本開始支援WebM格式[15]。羅技計畫使用WebM做為其視訊通訊服務的一部分[16]。
Chromium r47760和更新的版本，Google Chrome 6以及新版，Opera 10.60以及新版，Mozilla Firefox 4以及更新的版本已經支援WebM。
另外微軟也宣布，只要在本地安裝了VP8編解碼器，Internet Explorer 9也能支援WebM檔案格式[17][18]。
2015年9月，微軟宣布Windows 10內建的Edge將支援WebM（Opus、Vorbis、VP9）。[19]
硬體
AMD、ARM和博通等硬體製造商宣布他們有興趣支援WebM的硬體加速[20][21]。Intel也考慮，若WebM能得到大眾接受的話，會在其電視晶片上支援WebM的硬體加速[22]。高通公司和德州儀器也宣布會支援[23][24]。
