abstract	A method for the preparation of 1- (4-fluorophenyl) -1,3-dihydroisobenzofuran-5-carbonitrile (citalopram) of formula 1, characterized in that the aldehyde of formula 2 is converted to the corresponding cyano compound 5 of formula 3 which is then rented to form citalopram, an intermediary and an antidepressant pharmaceutical composition. Citalopram is an antidepressant drug known to be a selective serotonin intake inhibitor that acts centrally and has antidepressant activities.
