titleOfInvention FERMENTATIVE PRODUCTION OF FOUR CARBON ALCOHOLS THROUGH THE INDUSTRIAL FERMENTATION OF A MODIFIED MICROORGANISM
abstract Claim 1: A recombinant microbial host cell characterized in that it comprises at least one DNA molecule encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes a conversion of substrate into product selected from the group consisting of: i) pyruvate in acetolactate (step a), ii ) acetolactate in 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate (passage of path b), iii) 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate in alpha-ketoisovalerate (passage of path c), iv) alpha-ketoisovalerate in isobutyraldehyde (passage of path d), and v) isobutyraldehyde in isobutanol (passage of path e), where the at least one DNA molecule is heterologous with respect to said microbial host cell, and where said microbial host cell produces isobutanol. Claim 40: A method for the production of isobutanol characterized in that it comprises: 1) providing a recombinant microbial host cell comprising at least one DNA molecule encoding a polypeptide that catalyzes a conversion of substrate into product selected from the group consisting of: ) pyruvate in acetolactate (passage of path a), ii) acetolactate in 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate (passage of path b), iii) 2,3-dihydroxyisovalerate in alpha-ketoisovalerate (passage of path c), iv) alpha-ketoisovalerate in isobutyryl-CoA (passage of via f), v) isobutyryl-CoA in isobutyraldehyde (passage of path g), and vi) isobutyraldehyde in isobutanol (passage of path e), where the at least one molecule DNA is heterologous with respect to said microbial host cell; and 2) contacting the host cell of (i) with a fermentable carbon substrate in a fermentation medium, under conditions where isobutanol is produced.
