| abstract | A PDC (polycristalline diamond compact, polycrystalline diamond compact) cutter that has a cobalt-containing diamond crystal body is coated with Teflon that is impermeable to hydrofluoric acid. Once the Teflon coating has dried, a segment of the Teflon coating is removed, and a mixture of 50% hydrofluoric acid and 50% nitric acid is supplied to the diamond crystal body through tempering in the coating of Teflon for the purpose of eliminating by leaching the cobalt catalyst material contained within the body of diamond crystals. In an alternative embodiment, a similar process is used to coat a PDC drill bit and PDC cutters mounted on the PDC drill bit. Once the Teflon has dried, a segment of the coating is removed and the mixture of acids is applied through the hardened ones in the cutters to remove by leaching the cobalt in each of the diamond crystal bodies. In another alternative embodiment, a tube is placed on the PDC cutter, the tube having one or more temperate that exposes only the segment or the surface segments. |
