titleOfInvention METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF ELEMENTAL SULFUR BY PARTIAL OR COMPLETELY CATALYTIC OXIDATION OF CLAUS TAIL GAS
abstract This refers to a process and a process plant for the production of elemental sulfur from a raw material gas comprising 15%, 20%, 30% by volume, 40% by volume or 50% to 99% by volume or 100% by volume of H₂S and a sulfuric acid stream involving the steps of a) providing a Claus reaction furnace feed stream comprising an amount of feedstock gas, an amount of sulfuric acid, an amount of oxygen and optionally an amount of fuel, wherein the amount of oxygen is sub-stoichiometric with respect to the Claus reaction, b) directing the Claus reaction furnace feed stream to a reaction furnace operating at such an elevated temperature, as greater than 900°C, to provide a Claus converter feed gas, c) cooling the Claus converter feed gas to provide a chilled Claus converter feed gas and optionally removing ele sulfur; gas, d) directing the cooled feed gas from the Claus converter to contact a catalytically active material in the Claus reaction, e) removing a Claus tail gas and elemental sulfur, optionally by cooling the effluent of the catalytically active material in the Claus reaction, f) directing a stream comprising the Claus tail gas, oxygen and optionally a fuel as a feedstock gas to a medium for oxidation of sulfur, to provide an SO₂ converter feed gas, g) directing the SO₂ converter feed gas to contact a material catalytically active in the oxidation of SO₂ to SO₃, to provide a SO₃-rich gas, h) converting the SO₃-rich gas to concentrated sulfuric acid, either by absorption of SO₃ in sulfuric acid or by hydration of SO₃, cooling and condensation of sulfuric acid, i) recycle at least a part of the sulfuric acid produced to the Claus reaction furnace, characterized in that a number of fuels, in the Claus tail gas, are oxidized in the presence of a catalytically active material in the oxidation of sulfur, at an inlet temperature of less than 400ºC, with the associated benefit of allowing of the design and operation of a Claus tail gas sulfuric acid plant, with a significant reduction in support fuel consumption and a reduction in the size and cost of the SO₂ oxidation and sulfuric acid condensation steps.
