titleOfInvention | ON-SITE FORMULATOR AND GENERATOR OF PERFORMIC ACID |
abstract | Methods for generating performic acid by contacting the aqueous oxidizing agent and the liquid phase aqueous formic acid source are described. A system and apparatus for the in situ production of performic acid chemistries is further described. In particular, a continuous flow reactor is provided for generating performic acid at variable rates. Methods for the use of the oxidizing biocide for various disinfection applications are also described. Claim 1: An adjustable biocide generator system for generating the performic acid-forming composition on site characterized in that it comprises: an apparatus comprising at least one inlet, a length of tubing, a heating device, and an outlet for metering a performic acid-forming composition to said length of tubing; wherein said one or more inlets are in fluid connection with said length of tubing and supply reagents to produce said performic acid-forming composition in said length of tubing; wherein said reagents comprise a formic acid source and an oxidizing agent; and wherein said length of tubing is in fluid connection with said outlet for dispensing said performic acid-forming composition. Claim 13: A method of on-site generation of the performic acid-forming composition characterized in that it comprises: the adjustable biocide generating system of claim 1, providing the source of formic acid at a desired flow rate; providing the oxidizing agent at a desired flow rate; contacting said formic acid source with an effective amount of said oxidizing agent in the presence of the heating device to form a performic acid composition; supplying said performic acid to a downstream process, wherein said performic acid is a single or mixed performic acid-forming composition according to a selection entered by the system or user, wherein the reaction to form the performic acid composition starts generating performance instantly and reaches peak performance within the first 10 minutes or less. Claim 20: A cleaning method using the performic acid composition generated on site according to claim 1, characterized in that it comprises: obtaining a performic acid composition introduced into the system or user on site using the biocide generating system adjustable of claim 1; the application of said performic acid composition in an amount sufficient to sterilize, whiten and/or disinfect a surface that needs it. |
