abstract A process for the production of sulphuric acid comprises the steps of combusting a sulphur source with oxygen in a 5 combustion chamber, catalytic oxidising sulphur dioxide contained in an effluent from the combustion chamber to sulphur trioxide, hydrating the sulphur trioxide with water to sulphuric acid and condensing the thus formed sulphuric acid. At least part of the oxygen for the combustion of the 10 sulphur source and oxidation of the sulphur dioxide and at least a part of the water for the hydration of sulphur di oxide is contained in a flue gas being added to the combus tion chamber and/or the effluent downstream the combustion chamber.
