abstract "METHOD FOR PREPARING IN SITU QUARTERNATE AMMONIUM BICARBONATES AND QUARTERNATE AMMUNIUM CARBONATES". Applicant has discovered a method at the site for preparing quaternary ammonium metocarbonate salts and high yield quaternary ammonium alkylcarbonate salts from tertiary amines, methanol, and at least one of cyclic carbonate, aliphatic polyester (e.g. a polycarbonate) and ester (such as a carbonate ester) and their subsequent conversion to quaternary ammonium bicarbonates, quaternary ammonium carbonates or both in a single vessel reaction. According to an embodiment of the invention, the method includes reacting an amine and methanol with at least one of cyclic carbonate, and aliphatic polyester producing quaternary ammonium methanolate. This method does not produce or require the handling of corrosive quaternary ammonium hydroxides. Another embodiment is a method for preparing quaternary ammonium alkylcarbonate salts by reacting tertiary amines, methanol, and an ester. Quaternary ammonium methanolate or quaternary ammonium alkylcarbonate may be converted into the corresponding quaternary ammonium bicarbonate or ammonium carbonate, or a mixture thereof by methods known in the art.
