The present invention relates to biomass (e.g., plant biomass, animal biomass, microbial biomass and municipal waste) that is processed to produce useful products. A method comprising fermenting a low molecular weight sugar using a fermentation microorganism in the presence of oxidized fibrous biomass to a product other than sugar is provided, and wherein the method comprises producing the oxidized fibrous biomass using ionizing radiation. in an oxidation environment, sonication in an oxidation environment, or oxidative pyrolysis, before mixing with a low molecular weight sugar. |
