abstract "Processes for Preparing Imatinib and an Acidic Addition Salt of This, Imatinib Acidic Addition Salts, Pharmaceutically Acceptable Composition of This, Imatinib and Use of This". The present invention relates to a process for preparing imatinib, either as a free base or as an acid addition salt, which process comprises reacting N- (2-methyl-5aminophenyl-4- (3-pyridyl) -2-pyrimidine amine of formula (II) with 4- (4-methyl-piperazine methyl) benzoyl halide of formula (III) in the presence of an inert organic solvent to produce an imatinib hydrohalide salt of formula (I) where n represents 1, 2 or 3 and Hal represents bromine, chlorine, fluorine or iodine, either in anhydrous or hydrated form which may, as desired, optionally be further converted either to the free base or to an additional acid addition salt. The present invention also relates to imatinib prepared according to the above process.
