An organic electroluminescent element (EL element), in which an indolocarbazole compound is used, is provided. The organic EL element has an anode, a plurality of organic layers, each including a phosphorescent light-emitting layer, and a cathode laminated on a substrate. An indolocarbazole compound represented by general formula (1) is contained in the phosphorescent light-emitting layers, a hole transport layer, an electron transport layer, and a hole-blocking layer or an electron-blocking layer. In general formula (1): ring I and ring II are fused to an adjacent ring, and are represented by formula (1a) and formula (1b); and A represents C-R or N, with at least one A being N. L represents a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic hydrocarbon group or aromatic heterocyclic group, with at least one L being a two- to four-ring condensed heterocyclic group. R represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group, or an aromatic heterocyclic group. P represents an integer from 0 to 4, q represents an integer from 0 to 2, and r represents an integer from 1 to 4. X1 to X4 each represent an aromatic hydrocarbon group or an aromatic heterocyclic group, while l, m and n each represent an integer from 0 to 5. |
