Compositions and methods for selectively controlling invasive species |
abstract |
Methods and compositions for controlling the growth of invasive species by applying compositions containing natural pesticides derived from substances of invasive species, especially cryptotoxins. Disclosed herein are methods and compositions for controlling the growth of a first invasive species by applying to the first invasive species a composition comprising a natural pesticide derived from the second invasive species. In some embodiments, the invasive species is one in which the gland is the primary site of accumulation of the autotoxic compound. The first and second invasive species may be the same or they may be different. In some embodiments, the natural pesticide may be a cryptotoxin. Cryptotoxins (endogenous biocides) are biocides derived from endogenous bioactive agents (e.g., second metabolites) that do not cause overt toxicity in normal growth of producing species, but in producing species Induced to poison or suppress and even eliminate the parent species. |
