abstract | The invention relates to an assembly (100) comprising a bearing, a lubricant and a contaminant sensor (150) for determining a level of a contaminant in the lubricant. The contaminant sensor includes: an electromagnetic wave generator for generating an electromagnetic signal having a frequency higher than 1 GHz; and an electromagnetic sensing element arranged in contact with the lubricant. An electromagnetic sensing element receives the generated electromagnetic signal and transmits an output signal having signal characteristics responsive to real and imaginary parts of the complex relative permittivity of the lubricant. The output signal is received by an electromagnetic measuring device that measures first and second parameters of the output signal that are representative of real and imaginary parts, respectively, of the complex relative permittivity of the lubricant. According to the invention, the electromagnetic measuring device is configured to determine the level of water contamination in the lubricant based on the measured first parameter only, and to determine the level of metal particle contamination in the grease based on both the measured first and second parameters. |
