abstract The invention relates to an operating device (10) and method for operating a light source assembly (17). A DC voltage (UG) is supplied to the transformer unit (12). The light source assembly (17) is connected to the transformer unit (12) on the output side. The control unit (19) operates the transformer switch (30) of the transformer unit (12). The transformer unit (12) has a transformer inductance (32) arranged in series with the transformer switch (30). A desired current intensity (I soll ) characterizing the lighting power of the light source assembly ( 17 ) is predetermined to the control unit ( 19 ) for the induced current (IL) flowing through the transformer inductance ( 32 ), and the control unit ( 19 ) generates the transformer A switching signal (W) which switches the transformer switch (30) to its on state or its interrupted state. If the induced current (IL) reaches a predeterminable current peak value (IP), the transformer switch (30) switches to its interrupted state. If the desired current intensity (I soll ) is less than the average current intensity at the minimum current peak value (IP min ), the transformer unit ( 12 ) operates in discontinuous mode with the duration of the active period (ts) and the duration of the inactive period ( tn) to run.
