abstract |
Disclosed herein is a protective package forming apparatus. The apparatus includes an inflation assembly that directs fluid between overlapping first and second plies of web material. The apparatus includes a sealing mechanism including an arcuate web support surface. The web support surface includes a heater defining a heating zone operable to heat the plies to create a machine direction as the web is driven through the heating zone in a downstream direction A heat seal, the longitudinal heat seal sealing the first ply and the second ply together. The web support surface also includes a cooling zone disposed downstream of the heating zone, the cooling zone being operable to allow heating when the web is driven through the heating zone in the downstream direction. The plies are cooled at the longitudinal heat seal such that the cooled longitudinal heat seal retains the fluid between the plies. |
