A process for washing particulate matter, the process comprising: (i) combining particulate matter and a first wash medium in a first vessel to form a slurry, and washing the particulate matter with the wash medium; (ii) transferring the slurry to a hydrocyclone; (iii) removing a particulate matter-depleted first by-product stream and a particulate matter-enriched first product stream from the hydrocyclone; (iv) ) transferring the first product stream to a second vessel and forming a slurry in the presence of a second wash medium and washing the particulate matter with the second wash medium, eg by agitating it; (v) transferring the slurry to a hydrocyclone; (vi) removing a particulate matter-depleted second by-product stream and a particulate matter-enriched second product stream from the hydrocyclone . |
