abstract The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of the formula II tiotropium bromide comprising the following steps: (a) preparing the scopin ester of the formula I by converting the methyl bis (2-thienyl) glycolate to the formula IV; type III scopin in the presence of a suboptimal amount of a stereochemically hindered base selected from the group of alkali salts of branched C3 to C5 alkoxides in an inert solvent; b) isolation of the scopin ester with formula I; conversion of the compound into quaternary scorpine ester of formula I with methyl bromide.
