A purified and isolated polypeptide having all or part of the primary structure of the sequence shown in Figure 14C, optionally with a methionine residue at the N-terminus, exhibiting a hematopoietic biological property of a naturally occurring stem cell factor. The use of this polypeptide for the manufacture of a medicament for haematopoietic therapy in a mammal. A pharmaceutical composition comprising an effective amount of the polypeptide and a pharmaceutically acceptable diluent, excipient or carrier.
