An elastomeric composition comprising an elastomer and a carbon black aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase, and optionally a binding agent. The invention further relates to a carbon black aggregate comprising a carbon phase and a silicon-containing species phase, providing, when used in an elastomeric composition, an elastomeric abrasion resistance, a comparable or higher low temperature loss angle tangent and a low loss angle angle at a high temperature than the untreated carbon black obtainable by introducing the feedstock. carbon black and volatile silicon-containing compounds selected from silicate, silane and flowable silicone polymers to the reactor reaction zone; evaporating said components; exposing the components to high temperatures in the reactor in which they disintegrate in the reaction zone and react so that the silicon-containing species becomes an integral part of the carbon black; and violently agitating the reaction stream. This elastomeric composition exhibits poor abrasion resistance in the absence of a coupling agent, lower hysteresis at high temperature, and comparable or increased low temperature hysteresis compared to an elastomer containing untreated carbon black. The invention also relates to elastomeric compositions in which an elastomer and an oxidized carbon black aggregate are incorporated and a method for preparing elastomeric compositions is provided. |
