The invention relates to nucleic acid sequences encoding the ciliary neutrophic factor (CNTF) and the proteins, peptides and derivatives produced therefrom. These are useful for treating a variety of neurological diseases and disorders. Further, the CNTF nucleic acids, proteins and peptides can be used to treat motor neuron diseases. According to the invention, CNTF is also useful for restoring facial nerve function in Bell's palsy and in supporting the growth of spinal cord neurons. Further, the invention provides a novel method for producing chemically pure CNTF. The invention for the first time provides a means of producing human CNTF using nucleic acid sequences encoding human CNTF.
