abstract A spark gap (1) for surge arresters having a first electrode (2) and a second electrode (3) spaced therefrom, which form a spark gap as insulation path, and an annular insulator element (4) which is arranged between the disk-shaped electrodes (2, 3), wherein the insulator element (4) consists of one or more annular units (5, 6) and has a total thickness of "X", which in a simple way remains sufficiently insulated against rated voltage, even if in the cavity between the electrodes, which is surrounded by the annular insulator element to deposit material layers of the electrodes, it is proposed that the insulator element (4) at the same thickness "X" forms or has an extended creepage distance (7).
