abstract |
A turbocharger compressor housing (16) having a recirculation cavity (60) formed between a volute base (40), a pilot wheel (44) and an inlet section (46) for directing air flow from a compressor wheel (14) back into the inlet section (46) to flow out. The bleed air stream may enter a tapered return slot (70) adjacent the compressor wheel (14) and then flow through an in-compressor return housing cavity (60) to an inlet re-entry slot (72) in the inlet section (46). Such recirculated airflow may improve the surge margin. The impeller (44) includes a ring (50) having an inner surface (56) which is preferably aligned with a convergent wall (54) of the inlet portion (46), which may be a separate piece attached to a base of the compressor housing (16). attachable.
