abstract | The method for removing harmful substances, particularly halogenated hydrocarbons such as low chlorinated alkenes or halogenated cyclic compounds, from exhaust gas, by passing the gas through a reactor (42) containing a generated electric field. Active species are formed in the exhaust gas stream itself or in a separate gas stream supplied to the reactor as a result of discharge in the electric field. These active species neutralise the harmful substances by rendering them either non-harmful or easily adsorbable. An Independent claim is made for the apparatus used to carry out this method, which comprises a reactor with at least one inlet (50) and at least one outlet (52), which contains one or more active regions (54) where one or more pairs of electrodes (44, 56) are linked to a high voltage source (68), a field-free (passive) region (60) being located downstream from the active regions. |
