titleOfInvention Catalyst temperature control device
abstract A catalytic converter (19) in the exhaust of a lean burn internal combustion engine (1) absorbs nitrous oxides. It is kept at the optimum temperature by controlling the fuel/air ratio of the mixture fed into the engine. The lean mix is set at a level lower than the stoichiometric value, which cools the converter. A second, richer level, which causes the converter to desorb nitrous oxides and which increases the temperature of the converter, is set in the controller and the controller cycles between the lean and rich settings. The switching ratio is varied to keep the temperature of the converter at the optimum level. No additional controls are required for supplying air or fuel into the system.
