abstract | Liquid polymer for use in paints, and as intermediate for synthetic perfumes and plasticisers, is pref. by polymsg. a conj. diene, opt. together with an aromatic vinyl cpd., and 0.01-100 mole ethylene or propylene per mol diene in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (1) a nickel carboxylate, an org. nickel complex, tetracarbonyl-nickel, or an organonickel cpd. with a pi-bond and (2) an alkylaluminium halide of formula RnA1X3-n (where R is alkyl, phenyl, or aralkyl; X is chloride, bromine or iodine; and n is 1-2) or (3) a combination of (a) an organometal cpd. of formula A1R1R2R3, (R)2Mg, (R)2Zn or RLi, (where R1 is H, fluorine, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl; and R, R2R3 are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl), and (b) a halogen cpd. selected from chlorides, bromides or iodides of group III, IV, V or VI metals, or their ether, ester, or aldehyde complexes, or halides of aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbons, alkynyl halides, chlorine- or bromine-contg. ketones, cpds. of formula RCH=CHCHC2X (where R is H or aliphatic hydrocarbyl; and X is chloride, bromine or iodine), or cpds. of formula I:- (where R1 is chlorine, bromine or iodine; R2 and R3 are each H, chlorine, bromine, iodine, haloalkyl or alkyl). Process gives polymers with a very loq mol. wt. even at temps. 60 degrees C e.g. high yields of a polymer with a mol. wt. of 280. The mol. wt. can be controlled by varying the amount of propylene and there is no gel formation. |
