abstract In the mfr. of prefabricated concrete, the neat cement undergoes intensive treatment for optimum hydration and accelerated hardening at normal temp. Treatment comprises (1) applying a vacuum at constant reduced pressure to the steel mould contg. the unset concrete to expand the liq. capillaries in the neat cement; (2) using periodic, vertical, high-frequency vibration to obtain thixotropy; (3) applying an electric field via electrodes so interacting electrophoretic effects accelerate the hydrolysis; (4) removing the electric field and extracting the free water by suction, i.e. vacuum is applied on both sides of the mould; (5) using vertical vibration at high-frequency and low amplitude to compact the mixt. and (6) completing setting using the vacuum but without vibration (5) to obtain a compression strength of 11-15 kp/cm2. Used e.g. in the mfr. of large concrete panels on simple machines with low energy consumption.
